Netflix Malaysia raised subscription fees to “improve the quality of content”

Netflix will be charging slightly more next year for your subscription. The new pricing is going to be in effect starting 9th January 2020, but Netflix will be notifying subscribers a month before they charge the new rates.

There’s some refuge though. The new mobile-only plan which was launched earlier this year priced at RM17/month will not see a price hike, but all the others will. The new pricing will be as follows:

• Basic: RM35/month (from RM33/month)
• Standard: RM45/month (from RM42/month)
• Premium: RM55/month (from RM51/month)

While the price hike is very minimal, it is still a price increase. Interestingly, Netflix’s revealed to Lowyat.net that the change in pricing structure was a mere coincidence with the levying of Digital Service Tax starting 1st January 2020. They are revising the pricing stack to “allow the service to continue and further improve the quality of content and experience for users.”

The new pricing is inclusive of Digital Service Tax, so you don’t have to worry about spending an extra 6%. The price hike is also coincidentally around 6~7%, so the impact is actually not that huge if you were prepared to fork out a bit of extra change due to the Digital Service Tax our Malaysian government is collecting.
