Remember the Mi MIX Alpha’s display that curves all the way around its back? The manufacturer of the unique OLED display was Visionox. The China-based display maker is back again to awe everyone by being the first to announce that they are ready to mass produce their under-display selfie camera technology, or more accurately, the display panels to make that possible.

Visionox calls this the Visionox InVsee technology, which is a pretty nice pun. How Visionox approaches the under-display selfie camera challenge is by using a different materials for the screen over the selfie camera area. Visionox aims to use two different display panels in this solution, with the sub-panel above the selfie camera to feature next-gen materials and circuitry to allow it to be transparent when needed, allowing light to reach the underlying selfie camera.

By combining two display panels into one screen, Visionox is probably able to deliver a more cost-effective solution for OEMs, as the funky transparent materials used in the selfie camera section of the display should be more expensive than what conventional OLED panels use. This combination of screen technologies is claimed to be pretty seamless too, with a consistent appearance across both the main and also the selfie camera area screens. Visionox claims that with the aid of optimized software processing algorithms, the under-display selfie camera can perform on par with more conventional designs.

What remains to be seen is which OEM will bring the technology to market first. We know both OPPO and Xiaomi has shown off their prototypes, so it would probably be one of those companies. Or will HONOR blow our minds with a new HONOR Magic smartphone? Let’s wait and see.

On a side note, I wonder if any smartphone maker will be crazy enough to apply the technology across the entire back of a smartphone, allowing users to turn their phones transparent on a whim, or display an image there for extra customization. Or whether such an implementation is possible at all.
