HMD Global’s first smartphone with flagship specifications was the Nokia 8, and to some, that was rather lackluster. We loved it, as it offered excellent value for money and chart-topping performance, but HMD Global isn’t ready to rest on its laurels just yet. They have just announced four new Android smartphones and the return of a feature phone, the Nokia 8110, now with 4G.

Nokia 8 Sirocco

While the original Nokia 8 was an affordable beast of a smartphone, the Nokia 8 Sirocco will set you back a whopping 749 euro (~RM3608.38). Forgoing an aluminium body, over 95% of the Nokia 8 Sirocco’s body is covered by premium curved Gorilla Glass 5.

The other 5%? A solid steel frame that is 2.5x stronger than the 6000 series aluminium used for the Nokia 8, and that was already impossible to bend. This is crafted into a 7.5mm thin body, with edges that taper down to a mere 2mm. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is IP67 certified, which marks Nokia’s first waterproof smartphone. The specifications as follows:

CPU/Chipset: Snapdragon 835 (4 x Kryo 280 @ 2.45 GHz + 4 x Kryo 280 @ 1.9 GHz)
GPU: Adreno 540 @ 710 MHz

Front Camera
5MP f/2.0, Samsung 4E8, 1.4 μm pixel pitch, FOV 84°

Charging this much for a device with last year’s flagship specifications may not be in Nokia’s best interest, but then again, the Snapdragon 835 is still going to be faster than most smartphones you can buy next year. From the specifications, the camera looks like a massive upgrade, but then again, it seems to share the sensor with the Galaxy S7. Nokia does have ZEISS optics to take photography to the next level, along with the Pro Camera mode that was sorely missed from the original Nokia 8. Speaking of missing things, the 3.5mm jack is missing here from the Nokia 8 Sirocco.

Nokia 7 Plus

If glass is too fragile for you, or you are just unready to spend the amount of moolah you need to get the Nokia 8 Sirocco, the Nokia 7 Plus is one that might pique your interests. Featuring a body milled from a single block of 6000 series aluminium, the Nokia 7 Plus offers both style and strength. All for a price of just 399 euro (~RM1922.22). The aluminium is finished in a premium ceramic-feel coating achieved via a 6-layer paint system. The coating not only enhances the visual appeal of the device, but also improves signal quality while offering a better grip.

CPU/Chipset: Snapdragon 660 (4 x Kryo 260 @ 2.2 GHz + 4 x Kryo 260 @ 1.8 GHz)
GPU: Adreno 512
RAM: 4GB LPDDR4

Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac

Battery: Li-ion 3800 mAh (non-removable), fast charging

The Nokia 7 Plus will come in Black/Copper or White/Copper, and is arguably the best looker from HMD Global today. The 18:9 display will definitely garner it a few extra points over the edge-to-edge display of the Nokia 8 Sirocco. This is arguably the most interesting phone launched by Nokia today.

Nokia 6 (2018)

[MWC2018] Nokia brings forth 5 new devices; joins the Android One family! 31

The new Nokia 6 isn’t officially referred to as the Nokia 6 (2018). It is just the new Nokia 6. Destined to take over the mid-range, the new Nokia 6 comes with an affordable price tag of just 279 euros (~RM1344.11). While affordable, it is carved out of 6000 series aluminium unibody, finished with an 11-hour two-tone anodizing and polishing process.

CPU/Chipset: Snapdragon 630 (4 x ARM Cortex A53 @ 2.2 GHz + 4 x Cortex A53 @ 1.8 GHz)
GPU: Adreno 508
RAM: 3GB/4GB LPDDR4
Display: 5.5″, FHD (1080p) IPS panel, laminated, 1:1500 contrast ratio
Storage: 32GB/64GB (expandable with microSD up to 256GB)
Camera: Main Camera(s)
16MP f/2.0, PDAF, 1.0 μm pixel pitch, ZEISS Optics, dual-tone flash, Dual-Sight
Front Camera
8MP f/2.0, 1.12 μm pixel pitch, FOV 84°
OS: Android 8.0 Oreo (Android One)
Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
Bluetooth 5.0
LTE Cat 4 150 Mbps DL / 50 Mbps UL
SIM: nanoSIM (dual SIM in certain regions)
Battery: Li-ion 3000 mAh (non-removable), fast charging: 50% in 30 minutes

The new Nokia 6 will be available in Black/Copper, White/Iron and Blue/Gold colorways. The Nokia 6 will definitely be popular among smartphone users who want a stock Android experience for fast updates and better security, all while enjoying the build quality Nokia is renowned for. And it isn’t expensive, what’s not to like about the Nokia 6?

Nokia 1

[MWC2018] Nokia brings forth 5 new devices; joins the Android One family! 32

The design of the Nokia 1 might remind you of a smartphone from the early days of Android. No 18:9 or edge-to-edge display here, but what you have is a cheap device for $89 (~RM348.75). It will run Android Oreo (Go Edition), and even let you have a throwback to the days of swappable covers with the Xpress-on covers that come in four colors.

CPU/Chipset: MediaTek MT6737M (4 x ARM Cortex A53 @ 1.1 GHz)
GPU: Mali T720 @ 550 MHz – 650 MHz
RAM: 1GB LPDDR3
Display: 4.5″, FWVGA (480p) IPS panel
Storage: 8GB (expandable with microSD up to 128GB)
Camera: Main Camera(s)
5MP fixed focus, LED flash
Front Camera
2MP fixed focus
OS: Android Oreo (Go Edition)
Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.2
LTE Cat 4 150 Mbps DL / 50 Mbps UL
SIM: nanoSIM (dual SIM in certain regions)
Battery: Li-ion 2150 mAh (removable)

The Nokia 1 is intended to do is to make 4G LTE and the latest version of Android available to everyone. Still, Nokia has made it clear that they have strengthened the device with metal and glass fiber inserts for structural strength. Durability is definitely still going to be a strong point of the Nokia 1, even this far down the price ladder.

Nokia 8110 4G

[MWC2018] Nokia brings forth 5 new devices; joins the Android One family! 33

After revamping the Nokia 3310, the Nokia 8110 4G is yet another classic refreshed with the latest features. If you can consider feature phones to have the latest features. Priced at €79 (~RM380.59), you can slide to answer a call and close the phone to end it, and even spin it on a table. The Nokia 8110 is designed to flood you with nostalgia with its curved shape, not unlike a banana. And heck, it even comes in Banana Yellow!

CPU/Chipset: Qualcomm 205 (2 x ARM Cortex A53 @ 1.1 GHz)
GPU: Adreno 304
RAM: 512MB LPDDR3
Display: 2.4″, QVGA (120p) curved display
Storage: 4GB
Camera: Main Camera(s)
5MP fixed focus, LED flash
Front Camera
2MP fixed focus
OS: Smart Feature OS
Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 4.1
SIM: microSIM
Battery: Li-ion 1500 mAh

Sadly, the Nokia 8110 4G may never reach us as it is intended for the European market. It offers VoLTE calls and even the ability to sync contracts and calendar via Gmail and Outlook. You can even use Facebook on the 2.4″ display. Gaming is supported too, with Snake preloaded on this.

Pokdepinion: My vote has to go to the Nokia 7 Plus. It looks like it shares most of the Nokia 8 Sirocco’s camera chops, but comes with a more modern, and a much friendlier price tag. Then again, Nokia’s Sirocco name was never used on mainstream products.
