GPU price freefall is slowing down to a halt
We have previously reported of GPU prices falling drastically over the past few weeks, and it appears that the decline is slowing down. After going from over 300% MSRP in May 2021 to 153% MSRP in July, it appears that prices aren’t falling as sharply as it did before, with the latest report from 3DCenter showing that prices are stagnating.
According to the report, German retailers are offering NVIDIA GPUs at 3% less on average on 18th July, than on 4th July. Meanwhile AMD GPUs prices have gone up by 3% on average. The report goes on to mention that the average prices in the green camp are somewhat buoyed up by the high list prices of the new GeForce RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 3080 Ti cards.
Availability of NVIDIA’s cards are also apparently improving, with 3DCenter rating most of them at a 4/5. The only GeForce RTX 30 series card that didn’t get a 4-star rating was the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, which is somewhat understandable as that was one excellent bang-for-buck graphics card. Over on AMD’s end the situation is slightly more dire, with only the Radeon RX 6900 XT and RX 6700 XT getting 4/5 rating, while the RX 6800 gets 2/5 stars and the Radeon RX 6800 XT gets 3/5 in terms of availability.
This report is mainly only relevant for the Germany and Austrian market, but we do see a similar downward trend here in Malaysia, especially with the newer LHR cards from NVIDIA that deter miners from snapping them up.
While non-LHR cards are still able to command a relatively high price tag, the GeForce RTX 30 series LHR cards are more readily available at MSRP, for the most part. Of course, the current MSRPs are a lot higher than back in 2020, but at least you don’t have to get them through scalpers now, with better availability.
