iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max — here’s what you need to know about the latest iPhones!
Apple has just announced the latest iPhone 13 series, with four members, just like last year’s iPhone 12 series. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini make up the more “affordable” of the quadruple of devices, while the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max takes it up a notch for those with a bigger itch in their pockets.
Apple A15 Bionic!
All of the iPhones announced today pack the latest Apple A15 Bionic, but there’s a small catch. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max pack the Apple A15 Bionic with 5-core GPUs, while the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini only get 4-core GPUs. Apple claims that the smaller 4-core GPU is 30% faster than the competition, while the 5-core one in the iPhone 13 Pro series is claimed to be a whopping 50% faster. That’s just insane.
The rest of the specifications are pretty similar across the board, with a six-core CPU that’s 50% faster than the competition, an upgraded 16-core Neural Engine, and also a new ISP. The Apple A15 Bionic is manufactured on TSMC’s 5nm process.
Now let’s get into more details about the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini.
iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini
Apple reduced the size of the notch a little on the iPhone 13 series, which lets the iPhone 13 mini gain a bit more precious screen real estate. The iPhone 13 sports a 6.1″ display, while the iPhone 13 mini sports a 5.4″ display, just like last year. Apple claims that the Super Retina XDR OLED displays here have been improved, with a max brightness of 800 nits and a peak brightness of 1200 nits, which is pretty impressive. They also promise improved display efficiency, which contributes to the iPhone 13 offering 2.5 hours more battery life than its predecessor, and the iPhone 13 mini delivering 1.5 hours more battery life than the iPhone 12 mini.
Camera upgrades
But of course, the main highlight will probably be the cameras. Apple has brought the sensor shift image stabilization from the iPhone 12 Pro Max to the entire iPhone range, with both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini getting sensor shift OIS on their main camera. The 12MP sensor itself also seems to have come from the iPhone 12 Pro Max, with huge 1.7µm pixels and wide f/1.6 lens. The new ultra-wide camera is also capable of better low-light performance with 47% better sensitivity and a f/2.4 aperture. And oh, they are now arranged diagonally, instead of being in a vertical stack.
Apple is harnessing the performance of the A15 Bionic and the improved camera hardware to power the new Cinematic mode that allows for rack focus, as well as refocusing during and after capture, which is truly groundbreaking. Changing focus after an image is shot was pretty interesting back then, but when it comes to video, it’s another matter altogether. Cinematic mode shoots in Dolby Vision HDR, with support for 4K60 videos. For those who mainly shoot photos, there’s also Photographic Styles, which lets you add your personal touch to Apple’s multi-frame image processing pipeline.
iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Price in Malaysia
While the new iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini offer impressive upgrades especially in the chipset and camera department, the starting prices are kept the same. Apple has also doubled the starting capacity to 128GB, which means that you get more storage with the base iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini.
The iPhone 13 mini starts from RM3399, while the iPhone 13 starts from RM3899. You get a choice of five colors: Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight and (PRODUCT)RED. Pre-orders start from 1st October, with availability slated for 8th October.

iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
Much of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max is carried over from their predecessors. While they do get new colors, the design is very similar to the iPhone 12 Pro series. Of course, what lies under the hood is what matters, and on top of the aforementioned chipset upgrade, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max (finally) get a much-anticipated upgrade: a ProMotion 120Hz display.
The Super Retina XDR with ProMotion display featured on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max can go from as low as 10Hz to a whopping 120Hz. And knowing Apple, this adaptive refresh rate will probably be well-optimized and taken advantage of to deliver better battery life and fluidity as needed. The max brightness has also been bumped up to 1000 nits, or 25% brighter than the previous generation, making it the brightest display ever on an iPhone. The display sizes has not changed, with the iPhone 13 Pro coming with a 6.1″ display, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max with its 6.7″ display.
Even bigger camera upgrades
Apple appears to be closing the gap between the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, with both of them featuring the same triple camera setup. There’s the all-new 12MP primary camera that touts even larger 1.9µm pixels and an equally massive f/1.5 aperture. As you would expect, you also get sensor shift OIS here. This gives the iPhone 13 Pro duo up to 2.2X better low light performance than the iPhone 12 Pro, and 1.5X better than the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Then we have the ultra-wide camera that gets a wide f/1.8 aperture, that is apparently capable of capturing an insane 92% more light. There’s also autofocus now, which lets iPhone users finally partake in macro photography without having to get external lenses. This is pretty interesting, although we have seen Android smartphones do that several years back. Macro results from an ultra-wide camera are not always the best, so we will have to see how Apple optimizes the experience here.
Meanwhile the telephoto camera goes to 77mm now, or 3X optical zoom. From the ultra-wide camera to the telephoto camera, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max offers up to 6X zoom range, or 15X when digital zooming is taken into the equation. This is up from 2.5X optical zoom on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and 2X on the iPhone 12 Pro. Pretty interesting.
And on the software end, we also get Cinematic mode and Photographic styles. With these being the Pro models, Apple also added ProRes video recording, which lets you improve your workflow from the camera to editing. ProRAW is also featured here for those who want to edit their photos professionally. Night mode has been added to all three cameras, letting you take even better shots in the dark.
iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max Price in Malaysia
The iPhone 13 Pro series offer a new 1TB storage capacity option, which might really come in handy with all the ProRes video and ProRAW image capturing capabilities. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are available in four colors, the new Sierra Blue, as well as the regular fan favorites: Graphite, Silver and Gold. Pre-orders start from 1st October, with availability slated for 8th October.

I do think that the iPhone 13 Pro might be a strong option for the mobile photography/videography enthusiasts this time, with it sharing the same camera as the iPhone 13 Pro Max. And it is also worth mentioning that the cameras are already an upgrade from the chart-topping iPhone 12 Pro Max, so the iPhone 13 Pro does look pretty enticing. Or maybe just get the iPhone 13 or 13 mini, with its main camera that look like it is directly carried over from the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
