Apple has recently pushed to differentiate the iPad series from their iPhones by releasing iPadOS for the tablets, but now the iPad Pro gets an even bigger differentiating factor. The latest iteration comes with the Apple M1, the Arm-based chip that Apple used to power their Macs. In fact the latest iMac is also powered by the same chip, which hints at the sheer power available in the latest iPad Pro.

It would be interesting to see how Apple optimized the Apple M1 with respect to the cooling — or lack thereof — in the iPad Pro. It actually offers more GPU cores than the base variant of the iMac, which is really quite an intriguing move. The upgrade to the newer chip also brings with it upgrades like support for up to 16GB memory and up to 2TB of faster storage.

The iPad Pro will also be the first Apple M1-powered device to come with 5G, aside from being the first iPad to support 5G connectivity. Aside from that, Apple is debuting Thunderbolt 3 on the new iPad Pro. While the previous generation introduced USB-C in Apple’s mobile device product stack, the new iPad Pro’s support for Thunderbolt 3 brings with it support for external displays like the Pro Display XDR at 6K, faster transfer speeds and even up to 10Gbps LAN if you need that kind of speeds for your workflow.

On top of what’s under the hood, the new iPad Pro will also tout the much-rumored mini LED backlighting for its Liquid Retina XDR display. With more than 10 000 mini LEDs delivering a peak brightness of up to 1600 nits, the finer local dimming capability allows for a 1 000 000:1 contrast ratio, the new 12.9″ iPad Pro once again breaks new ground to bring what might be the best display in a tablet ever. The 11″ iPad Pro doesn’t come with mini LEDs but it still boasts the same 120Hz refresh rate, True Tone and P3 gamut.

The fancy LiDAR scanner on the back of the iPad Pro makes a return this generation, as will the 12MP primary camera and 10MP ultra-wide shooter. The front facing camera gets an upgrade to a 12MP ultra-wide angle camera, with a new feature dubbed Centre Stage that keeps your face centered in the shot, even as you move around.

Pokdepinion: Well the iPad Pro sure looks interesting… I think it can probably replace my laptop for most of my usage too. I wonder if anybody will try to run MacOS on it though, considering that it now runs on the same chips as Apple’s Macs.
