The newest Apple M1 Ultra chip has been revealed, and it’s said to be the most powerful ARM-based custom processor designed for the Mac Studio desktop PCs. In essence, it’s basically two M1 Max chips combined together with a new interconnect architecture called UltraFusion, which makes use of a silicon interposer which provides up to 2.5TB/s of bandwidth.

As it doubles the resources from the M1 Max, the Apple M1 Ultra chip comes with a 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU, and 32-core Neural Engine. In terms of performance, Apple claims that it offers 90% more performances for the same power consumption as the Intel Core i9-12900K, and even matching its peak performance with 100W less power.

Moving on to GPU performance, it’s said to outperform the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 while using 200W less power. Taking both this and the CPU performance, we are unsure as to what task was utilized to showcase the results. Memory bandwidth is said to reach 800MB/s and can be configured with up to 128BGB unified memory. The entire memory pool will be accessible to both CPU and GPU.

With the media engine block effectively doubling in capacity, it’s capable of quite a bit of media decoding. This includes playback of up to 18 streams of 8K ProRes 422 videos simultaneously. You can also make use of 5 displays, 4 of them being 6K Pro Display XDR displays while the 5th one is a 4K resolution one.

It’s worth noting that the Apple M1 Ultra chip will appear as a single process to all the apps. This means all the software can run and scale automatically without any changes needed to be done. After all, macOS is designed to scale accordingly with the hardware, so it will immediately benefit from the improved performance of the new chip.

Pokdepinion: To be more powerful than a 12th Gen Intel Core CPU and RTX 3090 while still being more efficient is quite the feat. With that being said, I’m quite keen to test it out myself and see how hard it can really go.
