Food Delivery Riders in Malaysia Going On A 24-Hour Strike

Food Delivery Riders in Malaysia To Go On A 24-Hour Strike Starting NOW 26

For those of you who are planning to make use of food delivery services on 5th August 2022 in Malaysia, you will likely face some issues as the riders are planning to go on a nationwide strike for 24 hours. The move, which is referred to as “Food Delivery Blackout”, is said to be done as a way to protest against unfair compensation towards the riders.

For those of you who aren’t aware, food delivery riders are paid a flat rate per delivery with incentives based on time and distance of the order. These people are also pressured to complete more deliveries on a daily basis in order to meet their income target. However, the feeling here is that they aren’t being compensated fairly, particularly on the orders that take a longer time to complete.

Due to the increasing number of food delivery riders available, competition has increased significantly among them, which inevitably resulted in reduced income for a good number of them. Furthermore, the SOCSO (Social Security Organization) and EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund) makes it harder to live by as these riders are considered contract workers rather than employees.

It is unknown as to how many food delivery riders will be taking part in this strike but given how it is trending on social media, we expect plenty of people to have trouble getting their food orders tomorrow. It should last for the entirety of 5th August 2022, starting 12AM.

Pokdepinion: I was initially planning to stay at home and rest but I guess I have no choice but to head out now. Sure, I could cook but that kinda beats the point of resting, at least for me given how extensive the whole process can get.
