The South Korean semiconductor giant isn’t done with the custom GPU project just yet.

Samsung Continues Partnership With AMD For Upcoming Xclipse GPUs

On Thursday, Samsung announced they have signed a multi-year deal with AMD “to bring multiple generations of high-performance, ultra-low-power AMD Radeon graphics solutions” to more Exynos SoCs. The partnership began all the way back in 2019, and few years later the Exynos 2200 was born – with the raytracing-capable Xclipse 920 GPU housed inside. It uses the same graphics IPs that is currently powering the latest generation consoles, including PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

However, the Exynos 2200 turned out to be a dud in general, losing out to Qualcomm’s flagship at the time, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, in gaming benchmarks. The continued issues and lackcluster performance has eventually led to Samsung’s mobile division to stay off their own Exynos chips in recent flagships, fully committing to Qualcomm’s SoCs instead.

It remains to be seen how this new multi-year agreement between two companies will turn out, though it is noted that Samsung is preparing for the next-gen Exynos 2300 SoC to supersede the ill-fated Exynos 2200 model.

Pokdepinion: The Exynos name at this point is pretty much stained in the eyes of the public, it’ll take a lot of work to get them back to become competitive again.
