Crucial Is Back Offering Premium RAM Modules With The ‘Pro’ Lineup

While Ballistix is dead – its spirits lives on (somewhat).

Crucial Is Back Offering Premium RAM Modules With The 'Pro' Lineup

Last year, Crucial suddenly pulled its Ballistix brand out of its RAM business leaving its DDR5 to the mainstream offerings. Ballistix ended its time with the world-record beating Ballistix Max DDR4 lineup that comes pre-overclocked up to a staggering 5,100MT/s.

However, the company clearly wants to keep making high-performance modules, and with it comes the new DDR4 Pro and DDR5 Pro models that offers overclocking features such as XMP and AMD EXPO. That said, the new design is markedly less gaming-centric, with no RGB present; the PCB themselves follow the same design as their standard offering with green PCB for DDR4 and black PCB for DDR5 modules, with the addition of heatsinks.

This also means that Crucial didn’t fiddle with memory timings, leaving it to the standard JEDEC specifications. For example, the DDR5-5600 runs on CL46 at 1.1V – much looser timings than some overclocked modules out there offering timings such as CL32 or CL36, albeit with extra voltage given of course. That said, JEDEC also offers tighter CL40 timings for 5,600MT/s – so it’s probably Crucial’s decision to stick with less aggressive timings available.

Pokdepinion: Still a bit of a shame Ballistix didn’t make it into DDR5 generation.
