Samsung 990 PRO SSD Now Available In Ultra-Large 4TB Version

Samsung 990 PRO SSD Now Available In Ultra-Large 4TB Version

Samsung’s current flagship SSD, the 990 PRO, is now available with a third option featuring 4 terabytes of storage available. The 4TB model is the follow up on the initial pair of 1TB and 2TB versions, both touting read and write speeds at the limit of what PCIe 4.0 protocol is capable of delivering.

Here goes the rundown on the specs: the 4TB version of the 990 PRO features the same TLC and proprietary controller from Samsung themselves, however the onboard DRAM now has doubled to 4GB LPDDR4 to work with. That translates to the same peak read/write speeds of 7,450MB/s and 6,900MB/s respectively, with random I/O speed rated at 1.6 million IOPS and 1.55 million IOPS respectively as well.

Samsung has also doubled the 4TB drive’s endurance rating to now 2,400 terabytes (or 2.4PB, petabytes), coupled with the five-year warranty. Despite being a 4TB model, the company says they managed to cram all that NAND into just one side of the M.2 2280 drive making it capable of fitting inside laptops with extremely low vertical clearances. On the opposite end there’s heatsink versions for desktop applications too.

The new model should be available starting this October; however, don’t expect it to come cheap – currently the 2TB model of the 990 PRO is sold for over RM1,000 apiece, so be prepared to pay double that for the upcoming 4TB version when it arrives.

Pokdepinion: Could this be the be-all-and-end-all of PCIe 4.0 SSDs? Maybe. That said, there’s plenty of SSDs to be had for cheaper prices while offering massive performance for the money.
