AMD Radeon RX 7900M Is The Company's Most Powerful Laptop GPU To Date

The biggest laptop GPU from Team Read has just arrived in the form of Radeon RX 7900M – and it’s the first time AMD is bringing a multi-chiplet GPU into laptops. AMD is touting 7% more performance on average against NVIDIA’s second-best, the RTX 4080 Laptop GPU, in QHD resolutions.

Launching alongside this GPU is a single model courtesy of Alienware m18 laptop, though it isn’t explicitly mentioned as one of the ‘AMD Advantage’ models despite the laptop comes available with the company’s “Dragon Range” 7045HX series processors. Conveniently, the laptop is also listed on Dell’s Malaysian website – though the price tag presented is seemingly on a placeholder, for now (and it’s unavailable for order at the time of this writing).

In terms of specs of the silicon, we’re looking at a Navi 31 similar to the ones in the RX 7900 GRE, which uses a slightly cut-down silicon paired with Navi 32-sized interposer (the base that silicon sits on). It comes with 72 Compute Units, 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM through 256-bit memory bus, 64MB of Infinity Cache and a total GPU power of 180 watts. However, in Alienware’s case – that figure is set to 160W, with SmartShift Max capable of pushing it to a real sweaty 200 watts of power.

As for the chances of this GPU making its way into other models, it’s likely slim – if not none. AMD’s GPU division has struggled to find laptops makers to feature its GPUs despite the AMD Advantage program successfully producing a handful of specially-designed models with all-AMD hardware in recent years, though when it comes to sheer market share, NVIDIA’s RTX GPUs are simply too big to compete in plain numbers.

Pokdepinion: Quite surprisingly given that the extra power and similar core count on paper, it should be put fairly close to 4090, not just beating 4080 in terms of performance.
