To Combat Scams, Maybank Secure2u Can Now Be Activated Through ATMs Only
Maybank today announced that the Secure2u two-factor authentication method will soon be requiring ATMs for first-time registrations or changing to a new smartphone device. This new policy will be in effect starting 31 October 2023, in an effort to combat against financial scams.
Dato’ John Chong, Group CEO of Community Financial Services said, “By allowing customers to perform self-activation of Secure2u via ATM, they can better control their online banking authorisation process by physically verifying their identity at the ATM, heightening supervision over their accounts and ultimately, safeguard their monies from scammers. We have also made the process easy and straightforward, keeping customer experience in mind.”
The activation process can be done in any of the 3,000 Maybank ATMs nationwide, operating at 6AM-12AM daily. Certain locations, such as in-mall ATMs, follows the operating hours of the premises.
Other banks, such as Public Bank, has implemented similar processes. The registration involves linking the Secure2u to a new device, and only after 12 hours upon activation that customers can begin to initiate transactions through the account. The bank noted that this duration, called “cooling-off period”, may vary depending on recent scam trends and financial patterns.
As a reminder – Maybank says customers are encouraged to abide by these rules to protect themselves online:
- Never click on hyperlinks from unknown sources
- Never download any apps from any links, apart from those that are published on official app stores, and;
- Never share your username and password with anyone, not even with friends and family members.
