External SSD enclosures more or less fall into two categories: the gaming-centric ones (i.e. ROG Strix Arion), or the pedestrian-looking ones that turn your regular SSD into a portable storage for cheap. This Chinese-made enclosure courtesy of a brand called Jeyi falls under neither category and carves its own instead: a SSD enclosure that visually resembles a Formula 1 racing car.

This unique piece of kit, named Jeyi ThunderRate, is found by outlet FanlessTech, which published a few photos of this enclosure from various angles. The body is built from a CNC-machined block of aluminum, and it comes attached with transparent wheels on each corner – as for the SSD itself, it sits directly under the belly of the car. The material meant it could function as a giant heatsink on its own, which helps cool the SSD without losing on style points.

The controller responsible for communicating between the drive and the host system is a Realtek RTL9210B-CG chip, which supports both NVMe and older-generation SATA protocols. It’s also limited to PCIe 3.0 x2 connections, meaning the top speed on paper shouldn’t exceed 2GB/s, though the USB 3.1 Gen 2 standard should already indicate it is designed for speeds at 1GB/s or so.

If you ever want one of these, barring any geographical limitations for that matter – it’s not a cheap piece of kit: on Chinese e-commerce platforms like Tmall and JD.com, this enclosure will cost a whopping $55 (~RM260) apiece. But hey, it looks fast!

Pokdepinion: Just don’t let the kids end up using it as a toy car, I suppose.
