This Is How AI Animates The Popular “Distracted Boyfriend” Meme

If you have been on the Internet long enough, chances are you have seen the “Distracted Boyfriend” meme at some point. It’s one of the most popular modern-day memes to exist thanks to its simple yet effective depiction of disloyalty (which can be used in virtually any scenario).

You read the title – the users over at X (Twitter) have decided to let the AI do the imagination and figure out how this particular stock photo would evolve in animated form. Video-based generative AI still has a long way to go before the content is convincing, as evidenced by the clip posted by @fofrAI and @burconsult.

The first clip posted by the former is largely natural, although finer details such as the face remain a pain point for AIs to properly render. In the face of the red dress woman that is out of focus, notice the face gets morphed out of place in the last few frames of the clip. In the latter’s case, the extrapolation is slightly different: with the man whistling towards the woman, her red dress has entirely morphed into a brown-colored coat as she turns around; whereas the shirt of the man has seen a relatively subtle change in texture and look.

User @fofrAI noted that the video is generated through Stable Diffusion, which has definitely proved that progress has been made since the rather infamous clips of Will Smith eating spaghetti (viewer discretion advised, I’m serious). It remains to be seen just how far would AI improve to reduce hallucinations and artifacts – which is likely to be a concern, as companies are scrambling to develop a tamper-proof standard of verifying non-AI content.
