Trump to give “timely” decisions on whether US tech companies can resume sales to HUAWEI

HUAWEI has been hit pretty badly by the US trade wars with China, with Trump imposing a ban on any sales by US companies to HUAWEI after the Chinese company was placed on an “entity list”. Trump claims HUAWEI is a threat to national security, although he relaxed his stance a little at the G20 summit in Japan last month. Now, he has promised to make “timely” decisions on requests by US companies to sell to HUAWEI.

Trump has reportedly met with executives from Qualcomm, Intel, Google, Cisco, Qualcomm, Micron and Western Digital to discuss the ban. Aside from affecting HUAWEI, the ban also saw huge drops in stock prices of the US companies involved. Back when the ban was in full force, Google was reportedly lobbying the US government for a lift of the ban to continue selling their products to HUAWEI.

The Commerce Department will be issuing licenses to sell to HUAWEI if they do not pose a threat to national security. Licenses could apparently be issued within a matter of weeks, so the companies involved are probably looking forward to it.

Previously, despite Trump’s announcement that US companies can continue selling to HUAWEI, the direction wasn’t nearly as clear cut. Hopefully after this US companies will be able to resume their business with HUAWEI quickly.
