E3 Is Dead, As Organizer Deems The Event Unsustainable

The writing is on the wall – E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) is no more. The event organizer, Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has posted on X (Twitter) with a simple message: “After more than two decades of E3, each one bigger than the last, the time has come to say goodbye. Thanks for the memories.” The short statement ends with a classic gamer term, “GGWP” (good game, well played).

Given that the event has long struggled to garner attention from major publishers – even before the Covid-19 pandemic hits – it’s no surprise that the event struggled to keep pace with the industry trends. Major publishers like Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, EA, Blizzard and more have moved towards hosting the event themselves, each showcasing their offerings at the time and place of their choosing.

Notably, the 2023 event also did not happen given that publishers had already announced to skip the event many months prior, despite the original plans to move forward. While the demise of E3 is something that may affect small-time publishers that possess limited outreach, it shouldn’t affect things in general as another similar event, Summer Game Fest (organized by The Game Awards producer Geoff Keighley since 2020) has largely taken its place in the years ever since.

Pokdepinion: It was nice while it lasted. Would Summer Game Fest carry the torch? We’ll see.
