In a recent blog post, Google announced the discontinuation of the standalone Google Pay app in the United States, with the application set to be unavailable after June 4, 2024. Users are advised to transition to Google Wallet as the primary platform for their payment needs.

Google Phases Out Google Pay App

The sunset of the Google Pay app will entail the loss of several features, including peer-to-peer payments, deal discovery, and balance management within the platform. While the app’s presence will persist in other markets such as India and Singapore, the focus in the United States will shift to Google Wallet.

Google clarified that Google Pay, in its broad usage, extends to millions of users across more than 180 countries. However, it is important to note that the desktop version, catering to ChromeOS, macOS, and Windows PC users, will no longer be available. On mobile devices, Google Pay is integrated into the Google Wallet ecosystem, featuring dedicated apps for both Android and iOS.

Google Wallet takes precedence as the primary service, providing a secure repository for payment cards, transport passes, state IDs, and driver’s licenses. Notably, Google Wallet has demonstrated five times more usage than the outgoing Google Pay app in the United States.

Users maintaining a balance within the Google Pay app are encouraged to initiate fund transfers to their bank accounts before the June 4 deadline. The transition will usher in a new approach to discovering deals, integrated seamlessly into the Search functionality. Users in the U.S. can expect to find a dedicated Deals section within the Search platform, offering a streamlined experience for locating the best offers.
