HONOR’s First Foldable Flip Phone Is Coming Later This Year, CEO Confirms
Chinese smartphone maker HONOR has brought a big announcement to this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024). CEO George Zhao told CNBC that the company will be unveiling the first-ever vertical-folding smartphone, making it potentially a new competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series.
In an exclusive interview with CNBC, he said: “This year we are preparing for the flip phone launch. Now, we are internally in the final stage. We are very positive about foldables for the future.” The company intends to upmarket itself to the premium segment in hopes of competing head-on against brands like Samsung and Apple.
It’s worth noting that HONOR has recently released the Magic V2, touted as the world’s thinnest foldable smartphone to date with a sub-10mm thickness when folded. With the engineering expertise on hand, similar packaging technology may be used for the upcoming flip phone to achieve thickness that rivals smartphones utilizing traditional “candy bar” form factor.
Aside from its foldable smartphone ventures, HONOR is also developing its own smart ring device, as the industry is widely anticipating companies like Samsung to fire the first shot in this newly-created category of fitness devices. “Internally, we have this kind of solution, and now we are working on that part, so in the future you can have the HONOR ring,” said Zhao.
