Apple often invites filmmakers to shoot films using the iPhone to showcase its imaging capabilities, and this time, the Cupertino company is showcasing a new 19-minute short film by Japanese film director Takashi Miike, titled “Midnight”.

Shot entirely on iPhone 15 Pro, this short film is a live-action adaptation of a Japanese manga created by “God of Manga” Osamu Tezuka. The storyline follows a late night taxi driver (played by Kento Kaku) who goes by the name of “Midnight”, roaming the streets of Tokyo offering help to whoever needs it.

“Midnight intervenes in a conflict between a young woman, played by Konatsu Kato, struggling to take over her deceased father’s truck driving business and fight off a nefarious local gang, lead by a boss played by character actor Yukiyoshi Ozawa. He joins Konatsu in a thrilling car chase across neon-lit Tokyo as he helps her find her feet,” the film description reads.

“Mr. Tezuka is like a god to anyone who aspires to be in the entertainment business. I am very happy to have had the great opportunity to make a live-action iPhone version of his work,” said director Takashi Miike. As one of Japan’s most decorated film directors, he has directed over 100 films and TV series, with standouts like “Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai”, “Straw Shield”, “13 Assassins”, “Close Zero” series, and “Lumberjack the Monster”.
