Move Aside, LPDDR5: Next-Gen LPDDR6 Standard To Be Introduced In Q3 2024

Fun fact: LPDDR5 is 5 years old this year, as it was introduced back in 2019. The memory standard has been a mainstay on smartphones and laptops for a good while now (with variants like LPDDR5X and LPDDR5T), which means it’s almost time for a new memory standard to take the mantle.

Enter LPDDR6. Korean outlet ETNews reported that JEDEC, the organization responsible for memory specifications, recently had a meeting in Lisbon to discuss the outlines of the new standard. It was said that more than 60 personnel from the industry participated in this meeting held on the 11th of March.

Two officials, both unnamed, have told the publication the following (machine translated):

Official 1: “We have held various discussions to confirm the LPDDR6 specification […] (The specification) will be disclosed in the third quarter of this year.”

Official 2: “Technology development and standard discussions are taking place to minimize power consumption as data throughput (and power) increases.”

Unofficial figures (per Videocardz) have put the maximum speed target for the LPDDR6 standard as 12,800MT/s; whereas the LPDDR6X sub-variant will push that figure to 17,066MT/s. Since the standard is not yet officially established, these numbers can change.
