In the wake of Apple’s shelving of its ambitious automotive venture, attention has turned to the evolution of CarPlay and its dynamics with automotive manufacturers. Despite debuting a promising next-generation concept in the summer of 2022, only Porsche and Aston-Martin have committed to the product thus far. However, a growing number of automakers are embracing the more integrated Android Automotive technology.

Next-Gen Apple CarPlay

Unlike the original Android Auto, the Automotive system is factory-embedded in vehicles, offering seamless integration. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman notes that while Apple’s next-gen CarPlay continues to run on iPhones, providing enhanced flexibility, it lacks licensing opportunities.

The upgraded CarPlay showcased boasts expanded functionality across multiple in-car screens, even controlling essential car hardware like climate systems. Meanwhile, Google focuses on enlisting carmakers to utilize its embedded Android Automotive.

Major players like BMW, Ford, and Volkswagen are now providing Android Automotive as an alternative for car buyers, alongside CarPlay, reflecting consumer demand. Apple’s initial focus on high-end automakers for next-gen CarPlay partnerships signals a shift in strategy post the “Apple Car” project shutdown, aiming to reinforce industry ties.

Presently, Apple has no plans to monetize the next-gen version, opting instead to collaborate with each manufacturer to develop tailored versions. However, Gurman speculates that Apple might explore monetization avenues, such as charging carmakers for CarPlay support or introducing premium upgrade options.

Additionally, Gurman suggests that Apple could streamline it by offering standardized templates, facilitating customization by both users and car manufacturers. This approach could potentially enhance its versatility and appeal in the automotive market.

Pokdepinion: I personally love the current version, though its limited in terms of things you can do (likely due to safety concerns). I’m hoping to see a big visual upgrade on top of a more diverse app support, like Discord.
