YouTube Videos With AI-Generated Content Must Now Be Disclosed
Despite its potential benefits, generative AI presents a big problem for both creators and viewers alike – what’s real, and what’s not real? With generation models like OpenAI’s Sora producing increasingly convincing content, it’s only a matter of time before the tool gets abused to spread misinformation.
Hence, YouTube is stepping in: the Google-owned video-sharing platform is now mandating users to declare any content that contains AI-generated effects, such as voice cloning and face swapping (or deepfakes). The disclosure was announced last November, though the requirement was not fully enforced until now. Any content that is declared with AI-generated content will see a small banner denoting “Altered or synthetic content.”
However, there are some leeways provided for creators in cases where the content is “clearly unrealistic”. Per YouTube’s blog post, users are not required to declare content as AI-generated as long as it meets these conditions:
- Clearly unrealistic content, such as animation or someone riding a unicorn through a fantastical world
- Color adjustment or lighting filters
- Special effects like background blur or vintage effects
- Beauty filters or other visual enhancements
On the contrary, content that meets these conditions must be declared as AI-generated (from Google support page):
- Makes a real person appear to say or do something they didn’t do
- Alters footage of a real event or place
- Generates a realistic-looking scene that didn’t actually occur
YouTube says it will begin rolling out this feature across all platforms in the coming weeks, starting with the mobile app, with website and TV versions to follow. The company is expected to update its enforcement measures to penalize content creators “who consistently choose not to disclose this information.” In such cases, YouTube may pre-emptively apply the disclosure should it determine the content to have the potential to “confuse or mislead people.”
