Makers Of Denuvo DRM Is Bringing A Solution To Stop Game Leaks

Games leaked during development can be pretty troubling for studios and publishers – just ask Rockstar how many times it has happened to them. Irdeto, the company behind the notorious Denuvo DRM, introduced a solution during GDC 2024 in the form of TraceMark for Games. It’s aimed to stop game leaks in the future via “platform-agnostic game watermarking”.

The premise of TraceMark is pretty simple: according to Irdeto, it’ll allow any leaked material to be traced back to the source with various visible or invisible watermarks attached. Even if the leaker decides to edit out the usual identifiable information, the watermark will remain persistent on the material even after cropping, compressing, and blurring the image.

The company recommends pairing TraceMark with Denuvo DRM during the development process which claims a “one-click solution that will discourage content and game leaks.” Now, everyone knows (and probably hates) Denuvo DRM, so this may introduce the unfortunate side effect that publishers may pick the necessary evil that is implementing Denuvo – often at the detriment of paying customers due to its performance penalties – if that means keeping their assets safe from leakers before the game’s release.

It’s unlikely that game leaks will be completely eradicated with the implementation of this technology, but by the looks of it, it certainly will make the leaker’s lives a lot harder – still, nothing stops the leaker from using a camera to simply capture what’s on screen if that’s the only way out.

Pokdepinion: Leakers will probably adapt – but I do think leaking will be a lot harder with this.
