AMD Will Stick To RDNA3+ iGPUs For Mobile APUs Until 2027, Rumors Claim
Prominent leaker Golden Pig Upgrade (金猪升级包) this time around took to Chinese microblogging site Weibo to discuss the latest developments of AMD’s mobile processors (APUs). Specifically, the leak is about the onboard graphics’ architecture, for which the leaker claims AMD will stick to RDNA3+ (sometimes referred to as RDNA3.5) for the foreseeable future.
“Due to reasons that are widely known, the onboard graphics of (AMD) APUs will maintain on using RDNA3+ long-term. A quick educated guess points to at least 2027, but it’s not known if it’ll be expanded down the line,” the leaker wrote on Weibo. Keep in mind that AMD has yet to officially release any product using RDNA3.5-based architecture, as the leaks thus far are indicating that such products – including Strix Point, Strix Halo, and Kraken Point APUs – will be launched later this year.
As for what exactly is the “widely known” reason, the leaker has hinted “Orion constellation”. Those in the know will understand that this points to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite SoCs set to be launching soon, which is powered by the Qualcomm Oryon (pronounced ‘Orion’) processor. The exact relationship between X Elite’s presence and AMD’s decision to stick to RDNA3.5 is not clarified here, however.
This means that AMD will stick to this architecture for at least 3 years – which will be the longest since the Vega-based Radeon Graphics that powers every Ryzen APU up until Zen3 architecture (Ryzen 5000/7030 series). For reference, Zen3+ APUs are powered by RDNA2-based iGPUs, while Zen4-based APUs utilize RDNA3 graphics architecture. Desktop Zen4 parts (including Ryzen 7045/8045 series) stick to RDNA2, however.
As far as the desktop is concerned, you won’t be seeing this architecture in a discrete GPU form factor. AMD is known to be preparing RDNA4-based desktop GPUs which are expected to be released under the Radeon RX 8000 Series moniker sometime later this year, and the leaks so far indicate that Team Red will be sticking to mid-range markets as it used to do.
