This SanDisk SD Card Can Fit A Whopping 4 Terabytes Of Storage

You would never imagine something as small as an SD card capable of cramming in so much data, but here we are. As reported by Anandtech, Western Digital (WD) recently previewed the world’s first 4TB SD card (under its subsidiary SanDisk brand), expected to be released in 2025.

The SanDisk Extreme Pro SDUC 4TB SD card adheres to the SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity) standard that, in theory, allows for up to 128TB of storage under this classification. It runs on the UHS-I interface and supports Class 10 speed rating, which guarantees at least 10MB/s write speed; though the Video Speed Class V30 certification means it’ll be capable of delivering a minimum of 30MB/s sequential write speed at all times.

As for what kind of secret sauce is used to make this SD card capable of such data density, WD hasn’t officially confirmed anything thus far. As the publication pointed out, this card may be using the Kioxia BiCS 9 NAND, the company of which WD is currently in the process of a merger.

Don’t expect this to come cheap, however. Comparing the capacity to conventional SSDs, SD cards are much more expensive per gigabyte, and given that 4TB SSDs are asking well over RM1,500 these days, expect the retail price of the 4TB SD card to go well beyond RM2,000 when it eventually launches.
