AMD Announces Ryzen PRO 8000 Series Mobile & Desktop Processors
After the launch of consumer-bound Ryzen 8000 series processors earlier this year, AMD is announcing the Ryzen PRO equivalent lineup designed for business uses. Like Intel’s vPro designation, these models come with extra security and remote management features but are otherwise identical on the silicon level.
One of the headlining features of the new lineup is the inclusion of Ryzen AI, excluding some of the lower-end models. The announcement consists of two families of chips, including the mobile Ryzen PRO 8040 series (codenamed Hawk Point) and the desktop Ryzen PRO 8000G/GE series based on ‘Phoenix’ silicon. All PRO series processors share the same feature set, with no further segmentation made, the company said.
In terms of numbers, AMD has published a few first-party figures comparing the Ryzen 7 PRO 8840U to Team Blue’s equivalent chip – the Core Ultra 7 165U (both at 15W). These include an overall 30% uplift in common benchmarks including Geekbench 6, Blender, PCMark, and more. The company further claims that productivity is even better on its silicon, touting an average uplift of 70%.
For frequent users of Microsoft Teams, the Ryzen nets up to 55% less power with 69% faster performance, AMD claims. Efficiency has long been Ryzen’s strongest point – and it even compares Apple’s M3 SoC for the battery life test with the teleconferencing app, which it claims superior with a minor advantage for Team Red, while significantly outlasting the Intel-powered laptop by 46%.
On the desktop side of things, AMD compares its Ryzen 7 PRO 8700G against the Intel Core i7-14700 at the same 65W power envelope. The numbers shown here are a bit skewed as most tests shown here involve the use of onboard graphics, which, to be fair to AMD – the Radeon 780M onboard is significantly more powerful than Intel’s rudimentary onboard GPU that’s largely reserved for display duty.
AMD says both the Ryzen PRO 8040 series and Ryzen 8000 series processors will be available from OEMs starting Q2 2024.
