One Can Never Have Enough YouTube Ads, Even When The Video Is Paused

When you pause a video on YouTube, Google thinks it’s free real ad estate: just in case you haven’t enjoyed enough ads (sarcasm), prepare to get even more of them. The video-sharing platform is doubling down on even more ads despite the general dissatisfaction, and this time it targets YouTube TV users as part of the testing.

Based on the latest earnings call from Alphabet – Google’s parent company – the test results have been positive: “In Q1, we saw strong traction from the introduction of a pause ads pilot on connected TVs, a new non-interruptive ad format that appears when users pause their organic content,” Google’s Philipp Schindler noted. For ordinary users like you and me, that sounds like more of our eyeballs’ time is going to be further dominated by ads.

The feature has been trialed for quite a while now, as evidenced by this Reddit post dated 5 months ago, and this report from 9to5Google when YouTube announced this feature nearly one year ago (at this writing). In its current state, the ad will appear on the right half of the screen with the paused video shrunk to the left side – bad news if you intend to pixel-peep details on the screen.

As far as we can tell, smart TVs will likely be the first to get this new ad format – it’s unclear if this form of ads will find its way into mobile or desktop clients, which comprises a bigger share of its user base (which means more eyeballs, and thus more money for advertisers).
