Proton Expands Global R&D Footprint with New Centre in China
Proton Holdings Bhd has inaugurated its research and development (R&D) centre in China, marking a significant milestone in the company’s collaboration with Zhejiang Geely Holding Ltd (Geely). The move aims to bolster Proton’s R&D capabilities and complement its existing facilities in Malaysia.

Situated within the Geely Automobile Research Institute (GRI) at Hangzhou Bay, the new centre’s opening coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia. This strategic initiative underscores Proton’s commitment to fostering cross-border collaboration and driving innovation tailored to meet the evolving needs of its customers.
The establishment of the R&D centre in China signifies Proton’s aspiration to mirror the success of China Euro Vehicle Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, ultimately positioning Proton’s R&D facilities as the sixth in the Geely Group’s global network.
With a workforce of approximately 50 employees, the centre will serve as a platform for international talent training and collaboration between Proton and Geely. It will facilitate knowledge transfer, enhance product development, and drive innovation across various domains, including intelligent driving and platform integration for both internal combustion engine (ICE) and future electric vehicle (EV) models.
Dr. Li Chunrong, Proton’s CEO, expressed optimism about the new facility’s role in expanding their global presence and strengthening its existing capabilities in Malaysia. He emphasized the company’s commitment to pushing boundaries, challenging norms, and unlocking endless possibilities in the realm of mobility.
The centre’s core departments, including the Central Research Institute, Data Intelligence Development Centre, and R&D Digitisation Centre, will spearhead their technological advancements and digital transformation initiatives. These departments will collaborate closely with their Geely counterparts to leverage local resources in China and drive the development of cutting-edge automotive solutions.
The launch ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Proton chairman Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar, Geely Auto Group CEO Jerry Gan, and other prominent figures from both companies, underscoring the significance of this collaborative venture in shaping the future of automotive innovation.
Pokdepinion: I’m guessing this has been in the works for sometime given that there will be a big focus on EVs with this, and it will inevitably benefit the Malaysian market as well. I’m just hoping it will prevent any spare parts issues moving forward for any of their models.
